Who says that Halloween sweets and treats have to be all about the after dark fun? How about starting the day with some Halloween Donuts? I think yes!
If you haven’t made homemade donuts, they are really simple. I use this donut pan, but if you do not have a donut pan, you could certainly make them in a muffin pan. These are baked, so while they don’t have the exact same taste/texture as the ones from the donut shop, they also don’t have the oil from frying, so a little less guilt goes along with these. You can even make them with white whole wheat flour to pack in some extra whole grains.
These donuts have a super moist base and the Halloween fun comes in with the great bright food colors from McCormick. I love their Neon Food Color kit which I used for the green and purple glaze for these donuts. The purple glaze I used is mostly the Neon Purple with a few drops of the Neon Blue. Such fun and vivid colors and I’m a huge fan of adding green and purple in for Halloween. For the orange donut glaze, I used a combo of the traditional red and yellow colors. You can really get creative with these, especially when you add some festive sprinkles into the mix.
These would be perfect if you are hosting a Halloween sleepover. My oldest is nine and sleepovers are the super popular thing, and talk about a fun and yummy way to start the day!
If you haven’t already, make sure to enter to win the awesome Spooky Squad Kit I’m giving away from McCormick. You’ll be ready to make your own donuts, candy corn cupcakes, no bake graham sandwiches or some other yummy Halloween treats that you can find on McCormick’s Monster Mash of Color and Flavor Pinterest Board.
Here’s what you need to make your own Halloween Chocolate Donuts…
Halloween Chocolate Sour Cream Donuts
Ingredients
For The Donuts
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt optional
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup oil canola or vegetable work best
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp McCormick Vanilla
For Glaze Coating
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4-1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp McCormick Vanilla
For Colorful Glaze Frosting
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/4-1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp McCormick Vanilla
- Assorted McCormick Food Colorings
Instructions
For Donuts
- Preheat Oven to 325 Degrees F.
- Combine dry ingredients in medium mixing bowl and stir well.
- In a separate bowl (or in stand mixer) combine buttermilk, sour cream, oil, egg and vanilla. Mix well to combine.
- Add dry ingredient into wet ingredients and mix well. Do not over mix, just until well combined.
- Fill reservoirs in a six count donut pan. It works well to put your donut batter into a large zipper freezer bag, clip off a corner and pipe the batter in. If you do not have a donut pan, you could make these in a muffin pan.
- Bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in donut comes out clean and they spring back when lightly touched.
To Make Glaze
- Combine milk, powdered sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl and mix well with a mixer. This glaze should not be thick like frosting, it should be more of a pourable consistency and you may need to adjust your amount of milk accordingly. This is simply to seal the donuts and help keep them fresh and moist. After donuts have come out of the oven, sit them on a cooling rack or baking sheet. Spoon glaze over the donuts. Allow to cool complete (much of the glaze will soak into the donuts).
To Make Frosting Glaze
- Once donuts have cooled, you can add some sweet colorful fun with frosting. Combine powdered sugar, melted butter, 1/4 cup milk and vanilla in a medium size bowl. Mix well with a mixer. Add more milk as needed. This glaze should not be as runny as the first glaze, but should not be too thick as you will be spooning it on to the donuts. Once desired consistency is reached, divide your frosting into separate bowls and add your food coloring. Spoon over tops of donuts and top with sprinkles. Enjoy!

Could I make this ahead of time and freeze and glaze later?
Kristi says
How many donuts does this recipe make?
Chelsey says
Hi,
What is the best way to store these?
Also when mine came out of the oven they stuck to the pan and flat on top, any tips? I used the same pan as you
Christi says
Chelsey – did you spray the pan with non-stick spray? I find some pans don’t need it but others do. Were they completely flat? I don’t think they get quite as round as traditional fried donuts, but should still be round. I’ve found that sometimes if I move my oven racks down lower, I get a better rise on almost everything I bake, so that might be something to try.

Do you taste the sour cream in these?
Christi says
Tiffany, I don’t think so.
