The only thing better than a chocolate cake is a chocolate overload cake! This rich and delicious cake might just be the best chocolate cake you’ll ever make!
I’ve made a lot of chocolate cake recipes over the years, but this one may, as they say, take the cake (sorry, can’t resist a pun). Some people like “light and airy” cakes. I’m not really one of those people. Don’t get me wrong, they have their place, but I like a cake with some body to it, a good dense cake, something you can sink your teeth into. This chocolate overload cake is just that, with a rich, deep chocolate flavor.
Writing a food blog, and being a busy mom, I spend a tremendous amount of time in my kitchen, cooking and baking. I put in a lot of quality time with my appliances each day and depend on them greatly. I mean it’s hard to be Love From The Oven without a working oven, right? So when the folks at GE Appliance Repair asked if I would like to share a recipe I love, and a bit about GE Appliance Repair, I was happy to say yes. Thank you to GE Appliance Repair for sponsoring this post.
So let’s get back to this cake, shall we? This chocolate overload cake recipe is based off the Brick Street Chocolate Cake recipe from the Brick Street Cafe in Greenville, South Carolina. It’s a thick, rich bundt cake with an amazing chocolate glaze on top. It’s quite simple to make, but the results are seriously impressive. Here, check out how easy it is in this video…
I also use instant espresso powder, which truly takes the chocolate flavor to another level. Not a coffee drinker? I’m not either, and it doesn’t taste like coffee. It just helps give the chocolate flavor more depth. If you haven’t tried using coffee or espresso powder in your chocolate baked goods, DO IT. Depending on the recipe, sometimes I’ll use coffee in place of water, as I do in my Dark Chocolate Cake Recipe.
Aside from that it’s your standards – sugar, butter, vanilla, eggs, cocoa, baking soda, salt, chocolate pudding mix and chocolate chips. The glaze is made of water, butter, vanilla, cocoa powder, powdered sugar, instant espresso powder and cream. The glaze tastes like a ganache that you made with chopped up chocolate and heavy cream. I use dark cocoa powder for both the cake and the glaze, but regular cocoa powder will work as well.
And of course you need your oven to bake the cake! We have GE Appliances in our current home, just like we did in our previous home. While their reliability has been nothing short of remarkable, every now and then something is in need of repair. When we need repair we depend on GE Appliance Repair for GE branded appliances.

LOVED this cake and I got so many compliments on it! I noticed in the video there was this hand platter that helped keep the chocolate glaze in the center. Do you mind sharing what platter it is?
Diane says
Can you make this in a 9×13 pan and change the baking minutes?
Christi Johnstone says
I’m sure you can, but I haven’t done so myself so I’m not certain on the bake time adjustment.
Mini says
Where does one get espresso powder? Do most grocery stores carry them? Or do I need to go to a coffee shop?
Christi says
Any grocery store, it’s just not something most of us pay attention to because drinking instant espresso isn’t usually super appealing. Any instant espresso or even instant coffee powder/crystals will do!
Dee Athey says
Most grocery stores have espresso coffee powders, but the very best one I have used is from King Arthur Flour products. Rich and yummy and no I haven’t a vested interest in the business, I just know their products are great! Cake sounds wicked good and just so happens I have a “chocoholic” having a birthday soon, she’s gonna love this one!! Dee (XtexGal) P. S. They also a a varied selection of cocoa powders and chocolates.

Wow! “Overload” is definitely an accurate name for this cake ? This looks so incredibly decadent and sweet. Not sure how much of it I could handle, but that doesn’t stop me from wanting to try it!
