Rosemary Dog Doughnuts
It’s no secret that my dogs are spoiled. I even created a dog cake recipe for them! What can I say? I love baking for him as much as I love baking for the rest of my family! And what I love even more is that I always know exactly what I’m feeding my dog when I use homemade dog treats.
This recipe for Rosemary Dog Donuts was the perfect way to mix up my dog’s usual treat rotation. The pretty donut shape makes them picture perfect. Skip the Krispy Kreme Doggie Donuts and bake up a batch of these next time you have a family breakfast, so your puppy can join in on the fun!
Reasons to Make This Recipe
If the adorable image of your dog eating a “donut” isn’t enough to convince you, here are a few more reasons to give homemade dog donuts a try.
- Easy to make. You probably already have the ingredients on hand!
- No dyes or preservatives. Store bought treats have an ingredient list a mile long. These are all natural and free of unhealthy additives.
- Health benefits of rosemary. This herb is reported to aid dogs with digestion and memory. Rosemary is even known to act as a natural flea repellent for many dogs!
- Olive oil for shiny coats. Dog Donuts are made with olive oil, which helps keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy.
- They look adorable. Don’t forget to take a picture of your dog with his donut! That is, if he doesn’t gobble it up right away. (Mine definitely did.)
Can dogs have donuts?
They can when you make them dog safe! This dog donut recipe includes only ingredients that are shown to be safe for dogs. Use dog donuts as a treat for a special occasion or a reward for a job well done.
Typical doughnuts made with white flour and lots of sugar, should not be served to doggies. Save those (like these baked pumpkin donuts) for yourself!
The ingredients in this recipe are generally recognized as safe for dogs. While I am comfortable feeding these to my dog, I always suggest consulting with your veterinarian for what is safe for YOUR dog.
Dog Donut Tips and Tricks
- The cream cheese topping is optional. The plain donuts are just as great for your doggie, and to be honest less messy.
- You don’t need to grease your pan because the oil included in the donuts should do the trick.
- Swap the rosemary for other dog friendly herbs if desired. Fresh oregano and parsley are other good choices.
How To Make Dog Donuts
Making these doggy delights is super simple. Ingredients are combined and mixed by hand. After the mixture comes together, pipe it into a donut pan, then bake. Such a simple way to make a special treat for your pup!
Recipe FAQs
Can I make this without a donut pan?
Yes. If you don’t have a donut pan, you can always put dollops of the batter on a cookie sheet and bake them that way. Start at 7 minutes for the cooking time and add time if needed. They won’t be a perfect donut shape, but your dog won’t mind!
How do you pipe the batter into the pan without a piping bag?
Make a piping bag substitute with a ziplock bag. Spoon the batter into the bag and snip off the corner. Then, you’re ready to pipe away!
Can you freeze these dog donuts?
Yes, you can freeze these doggie donuts if desired. Do it before adding the cream cheese topping. Let thaw before serving. You can feed them to your dog frozen, however aggressive chewers may risk breaking a tooth when these are rock solid.
