Blueberry Frozen Dog Treats
Because we can’t serve dog cake every day, it’s time to mix it up with a cool, literally and figuratively, fruity treat today.
Easy frozen treats are a great no-bake way to show your best friend some love. They only take a few minutes to make, then hang out in the freezer until frozen. It’s great to have a bag of these ready in the freezer to mix up the daily treat rotation.
Ingredients
These frozen dog treats pack a nutritional punch with blueberries, coconut oil and thyme.
Blueberries
Can dogs eat blueberries? Yes, they can! They are a great source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and more. Studies have shown that antioxidants in a dog’s diet can help reduce the effects of brain aging. They are low in calories, but high in Vitamin C and fiber. As with all other items, moderation is the key in feeding these to your dog.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has been shown to increase energy levels as well as improve skin, coat, digestion and even reduce allergic reactions. Make sure to use a high quality coconut oil, and once again, moderation is key. If you have questions, make sure to check with your vet.
Thyme
Thyme brings antioxidants, antiseptic and antimicrobial qualities to the mix.
Safety
The ingredients in this recipe are generally recognized as safe for dogs. While I am comfortable feeding these to my dog, I always suggest consulting with your veterinarian for what is safe for YOUR dog.
How To Make Frozen Dog Treats
These treats are easy to make, but you will need a paw-shaped silicone mold. If you want to make one without the paw mold, an ice cube tray should work as well.
To start, you melt the coconut oil, using a baking syringe or pourable measuring cup, place a bit into each mold, then place in the freezer. After that the blueberries are blended in a blender until smooth. The blueberry puree is then added to the paw mold. A bit of thyme is sprinkled on each treat, then into the freezer they go for two or more hours.
If you are pressed for time, or just don’t need the cute little layers, you can mix the blended blueberries and melted coconut together, then pour into the mold.
How To Store Frozen Dog Treats
These treats need to be kept in the freezer to prevent melting. I suggest storing them in a sealed freezer bag for up to two months.
