Chocolate Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
This is an overview of the ingredients you will need to make this easy chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie bowl recipe. Important notes and substitutions for certain ingredients are discussed. The full printable recipe, with amounts and specific details, can be found at the bottom of the page.
Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
- Milk – Whole milk really helps make these smoothie bowls rich and creamy. That said, you can absolutely use almond milk, soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk or even coconut water in this recipe to make it vegan if desired.
- Cocoa Powder – Whichever cocoa powder you keep on hand will work. Some of my favorites are Rodelle, Guittard and Hershey’s Special Dark, which I usually can find at my grocery stores. You can also use cacoa powder if desired.
- Peanut Butter – I recommend using an unsweetened version. You could also use a different nut butter if desired.
- Bananas – The riper, the better! The sweetness in this recipe comes solely from bananas. A ripe banana will be sweeter than a green one, and will impact the flavor of this chocolate smoothie bowl. Make sure they are nice and frozen, and this is how you get the great ice cream like texture. I recommend putting them in the freezer the day or night before using.
- Optional Add Ins – If desired you could add in pitted dates for more sweetness, protein powder or even some cashews. Just blend in with the other ingredients.
How To Make A Chocolate Smoothie Bowl
- Place milk, cocoa powder, peanut butter and bananas to a high speed blender.
- Process on high speed. If you are having difficulties, push the mix on the side with a spoon and add 1-2 tablespoons of additional milk to the blender. Blend again.
- Top as desired and serve or freeze immediately.
Smoothie Bowl Tips and Advice
- Always add milk first then other ingredients.
- Prepare your toppings first then blend smoothie.
Blending
It’s actually possible to make smoothie in a food processor. Cut the frozen ingredients in small pieces and process until smooth. I used the Vitamix TNC 5200 to make the smoothie.
Storage
You can make ahead of time, then keep in the freezer if desired. Remove 5 minutes from the freezer before serving. You can also add all ingredients except the milk in a ziplock plastic bag and store in the freezer to make at another time.
