Chocolate fondue is a dessert that gathers everyone together to not only eat, but also enjoy some time together. It’s so easy in today’s busy world to eat on the run and go our separate ways. That’s not the case with fondue!
I think that’s one of the things that makes fondue a special dessert. It slows us down and creates a wonderful excuse to sit down and enjoy time, and chocolate, together. This makes it a fantastic Valentine’s Day dessert idea, and my family enjoys it every year on New Year’s Eve.
Chocolate Fondue Ingredients

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Chocolate – I highly recommend using a mix of two or more types of chocolate in this recipe. While it’s not required, I find that it really creates great flavor. Some of the options include milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, even white chocolate. Because this recipe is mostly chocolate, the quality and type of chocolate you use has a huge impact on the flavor, so use the best chocolate you can. Personally I like to use Guittard Chocolate Chips, or chocolate baking bars.
Heavy Cream – You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream. You can also add more heavy cream than I do in this recipe, if you want a more liquid like texture. With kids, the thick chocolate fondue tends to create less of a drippy mess, but by all means, you can increase the amount of heavy cream if desired.
Optional – You can also add a teaspoon of vanilla extract, as well as a pinch of salt if desired. I personally am a fan of adding salt, but not everyone is, so I did not include it in this recipe. You could also stir a spoonful of peanut butter into the fondue if you like. Crunchy peanut butter is even better!

Tips And Advice
Chocolate Fondue Dippers
Wondering what to serve with chocolate fondue? Here are some of our favorite chocolate fondue dippers.
Fresh Fruit – Strawberries, bananas, cherries, grapes, apples, pears, pineapple, kiwi, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, melon and orange slices are all delicious options.
Crunchy Treats – Graham crackers, pretzel rods, biscotti, Oreos, wafer cookies, Biscoffs, vanilla wafers, palmier cookies, other cookies, rice krispies treats or even potato chips.
Soft Sweets – Pound cake, brownie bites, angel food cake, cheesecake (freeze individual bite size pieces prior to serving), cream puffs, donut holes, macaroons, marshmallows, beignets, stroopwafels, cookie dough bites or churros are all delicious chocolate dippers!
Fondue Mix Ins
Get deliciously creative with your chocolate fondue by adding some mix-ins. Simply add any of these items just prior to serving.
Peanut Butter – Stir in a spoonful of creamy or crunchy peanut butter.
Caramel – Swirl in a squeeze of caramel sauce.
Nuts – Sprinkle on toasted, chopped almond or pecan pieces.
Marshmallow Creme – Get s’mores inspired, stir in some marshmallow creme, and serve with graham crackers.
Serving
There are a number of ways to serve your fondue. While many enjoy eating from a communal pot with fondue forks, it’s not my favorite, at least when eating with kids. We often serve single size servings of fondue in ramekins and just use forks.
While I personally prefer to make my fondue in the microwave, and not in an electric fondue pot, I will sometimes transfer the fondue to a fondue pot to help keep it warm. Just make sure to keep a very close eye on the temperature. It’s been my experience that most at-home fondue pots can go from cool to hot very fast.
Storage
If you have any leftover chocolate fondue, store it tightly covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, microwave for 30 seconds, then stir. If not yet melted and warm, heat for another 30 seconds, and repeat as needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
From salty pretzels to fresh fruit, cookies to cheesecake, the sky is the limit when it comes to chocolate fondue dippers.
Chocolate fondue is made of chocolate and heavy whipping cream. Vanilla and salt can also be added if desired. Milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate or bittersweet chocolate can be used.
First, make sure that your bowls, utensils and any tools are completely dry. Water can make the fondue seize. Also, make sure your chocolate is warm enough, as it will start to harden as it cools. If fondue will be served over a period of time, keeping it warm in a fondue pot or small crockpot can help.
