This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has tried to eat this? I want to make it for my dogs birthday but he is a tiny Chihuahau and my other dog is a tiny chi also. I don’t want to waste it. So I was wondering what it would taste like to a human?! Lol this is a serious question I am not trolling.
Christi Johnstone says
You can, I would just expect it to be a bit bland. But all ingredients are fine for you to eat as well.

Hi just wondering about the flour in this recipe from everything I heard regular flour is not good for dogs just wondering if you have researched about this and if what I’ve heard is true I really like your recipe and I’m having a party for my dog Zeus’s first birthday party this weekend would like to make this cake can you please let me know if what I’ve heard is true I’m trying to bake the cake by Friday so the quick response would be nice thank you so much have a great night Jamie DeWitt
Christi Johnstone says
Jamie, I am comfortable making it for my dogs, as do many of my readers. I can’t tell you what YOU consider to be okay for yours. That’s going to have to be up to you, your research and your vet. Some people think no humans should eat flour, but most of us eat it. You might think walnuts are safe, but they are deadly to me. More than ever ingredients in food, for people or dogs, have become fairly subjective and personal, as so many of us have food allergies or sensitivities – making “safe” a case by case basis. I’m sorry I can’t give you a black and white answer, but what is “good” is something you’ll have to decide.

Super easy and fun to make. Toby my Golden Retriever LOVED it and so did all his doggy pals. I made it for his 1st Birthday and I’m sure I’ll make it again for future b-days. Highly recommended!

My baby Kratos love love loved your recipe! He had a fantastic bday, thank you!

I’ve made this before and my dogs loved it! But since the last time I made it we’ve gotten a cat and I was wondering if this is safe for cats to eat too. If not that’s ok, but I’d love for him to be part of the birthday festivities too. Thanks in advance for letting me know!
Christi Johnstone says
Maggie, so glad your dogs liked it! I’m afraid since I don’t have cats I’m not as familiar with their foods. I’d probably google each of the ingredients or check for a list of foods cats can’t have.
