This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

can I use a 9×12 inch pan instead of two round pans
Christi says
Hi Brenda, it would probably work fine, you’ll just have to watch it to adjust for time. 🙂
Steve says
Hey there i was wondering about how long the cake will stay good for in the refrigerator? I’m not really thinking letting my pooch eat the whole thing in one sitting is a good idea? Do you let your dogs eat it all at once or just give them pieces ? Thank you! Steve
Christi says
Hi Steve, it would most likely last a few days, when wrapped and stored in the fridge, exactly as any regular (human) cake recipe would last. You could also freeze portions if you have more cake than you need for a few days time. Hope that helps!

I don’t have pumpkin puree Can I double up on the unsweet applesauce?
Nancy says
Thank you for this recipe! Doubled up and made it sans applesauce since I had none, and used used a whole can of pumpkin. Also added about 1/3 c water as the batter was so stiff. Baked inmuffin tins with paper wraps for 18min. Possibly a little long. 15 would have been plenty.
For icing, peach sugar free custard style yogurt, peanut butter, and a tablespoon of sugar free apricot preserves. They each got candles and the birthday song. I blew them out. Needless to say, they ate these in the back yard.
All three dogs went wild at their 5th Rottweiler, 4th Husky and 10th Corgi joint birthday celebration.
Thanks so much!

This recipe was easy to make and my dog, BEAR, LOVED it and so did his guests. I had many of my guest wondering if they could eat them because they looked so good. The dogs enjoyed it so much and there were NO problems later with vomiting or diarrhea because I checked with all the owners. What a great recipe!!! This will be BEAR’s yearly cake recipe!!!!! Thank you for sharing your talent!!!
Christi says
You are so very welcome! So glad that Bear enjoyed it!
Rachael says
I used coconut flour because I have heard all purpose flour can upset dogs tummies, it came out super soft and not really cake like but hoping my pup loves it. Today is her 1st birthday!!
Brooke says
Maybe a dumb Q, but do you use plain flour or self rising?
Christi says
Just regular all-purpose. 🙂
Julie says
Would this cake be ok to make a day prior and store in a container? Using it for first birthday pup shoot but will have to take it with us so I wanted to make it tonight for tomorrow morning
Hannah Stephens says
Hi! For some reason I don’t have baking soda! Can I use baking powder instead?
Thank you!
Christi says
In this particular recipe I haven’t done so, so I can’t speak to the results.
Anne says
Thanks for sharing this. I just made this to celebrate my dog’s adoption/birthday. I got him about a year ago. He loved the cake! And so did his canine brother.
