This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

I’m curious if oat flour can be substituted for the flour. My pup and her brother (who belongs to my son and daughter in law) turn one on Wednesday, April 6th. I want to make cupcakes so they can share with their friends who always visit them at the fence. I’m just looking for a healthier alternative but willing to make as is if needed.

I’ve only made it as written, so I can’t speak to what the result would be. Let us know how it turns out if you try it!

My Golden loved this cake, she turned one on April 1st. Super easy and fast to make. Definitely will be making these again for her just cause.

I’m have my own bakery and I use this recipe for my furry friends birthdays! All of the dogs I have given this to have enjoyed it thoroughly! I found this recipe one year ago today, and I am making it for my dog for the second time! He turns eight tomorrow 04/01!

I’m going to try this tomorrow for my French Bulldog Stitck. Her birthday is Thursday. I might make cupcakes instead of cake tho.

Hi there. I don’t have any pumpkin puree. How important is it in the recipe and are there any alternatives???x
Christi Johnstone says
I’ve only made it with the pumpkin puree. Let us know if you come up with something else and try it!
Rachel says
I wish I could make this for our dogs, but sadly one of our dogs is allergic to peanut butter. Could I use something else as a substitute?

Is it one egg or two. Just confused because video shows 2 eggs and recipe shows 1. Thank you
Christi Johnstone says
It’s 1 egg, always follow the recipe card. As mentioned in the notes, the recipe can be doubled as shown in the photos.

I make this for our dogs every year! They’re small dogs so I make these into cupcakes and they share with their friends. . Makes about 8 and I bake them for about 18 minutes. They love them!
Lorraine says
I followed the recipe as you posted but it did not raise what did I do wrong?
Christi Johnstone says
Lorraine, this is not a light and fluffy cake, so it doesn’t rise that much. It’s more of a dense cake, as that holds up to the pups a bit better.
Chris says
Turned out great! Wish I could post a picture! And my girlie knew it was for her the entire time I was making it. Cannot wait to give it to her later. I know already the icing is a hit. I squirted what was left in the icing tip in their mouths. At first, they didn’t know what was happening with that move. But when they realized, their eyes were popping and tongues working overtime. Fun IS good. Thanks for the recipe!
