This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

Thanks for the great recipe! I made it last year for our pup’s gotcha day party – all the dogs gobbled it up! It was such a success that I’m making it again this year. Just wondering… do you use NF or FF Greek yogurt?
Christi Johnstone says
I usually use between a 2% and full fat yogurt, just depends on what’s on hand.

Is the baking powder safe? Because I read on an article it’s not so good. Overall the cake looks amazing
Christi Johnstone says
I always suggest you speak to your vet about what is safe for your dog. That said, you can always leave it out, it’ll just be a bit denser, but I doubt your pup will mind.

Maybe consider changing the title for the post? I wasn’t sure I’d click on the post because it sounded like you were using spoiled hotdogs to make food. I was very concerned. The recipe looks great though!
Christi Johnstone says
Ha, well given it’s been my most popular post for over 5 years, I think I’ll leave it as is. 🙂 The picture in the search results is pretty helpful.

I make this same recipe for my lab every year, and he LOVES it. I swap the flour for brown rice flour to make it GF. As a human, the recipe sounds intense, but I definitely recommend it as a healthy birthday treat for dogs!
Robb says
Obviously these ratings are friends and family. This is one of the worst recipes for a dog birthday cake I’ve ever tried. I find the lower star ratings recipes are better and work a hell of lot better. Obviously your here for ratings and not truth. This recipe absolutely sucks and I recommend you look elsewhere
Christi Johnstone says
Wow Robb, sorry that it sounds like you are having a tough day. Sorry to say that I don’t have hundreds of friends and family leaving reviews and sharing photos and their own experiences with the Spoiled Dog Cake on Instagram.
Many people, and their pups, just simply love the recipe. The pics and stories I get from readers about it always make my day, it’s really sweet. I’m sorry to hear you aren’t one of them, hopefully the world wide web holds something you’ll find more suitable. Best wishes!
Christine Templeton says
Made the cake, used large muffin tins that probably holds about twice the batter of regular muffins. Also used Almond Flour instead of all purpose wheat flour. Worked great, made a nice tender cake with extra fir later treat. Used only plain 2% greek yogurt to frost, looked nice. My dogs loved it.
Hans says
Super easy. Made pup-cakes rather than a full cake and froze some for later. My dog devoured his and kept licking the plate for more.
Rikki says
Use it every year for my pups and she loves it however I never have the ingredients for it

Can I not use pumpkin puree?
Christi Johnstone says
You could use a squash puree I guess, but I’ve only made the recipe the way it’s been tested and written here.
