This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

This is the first time I have made a cake for my dog, she turned two today, I think it turned out great, for a dog, like you probably shouldn’t eat it (although it is completely safe to do so) though it does taste better than a peanut butter protein cake that I once made (that was for humans to eat). Thank you for the great recipe, will make it again next year (If I remember!)

I just made this and a friend asked what peanut butter did i use as some have sweenters that can be poisionous for dogs, what is the best brands to use thanks?
Christi says
Hi Janet, yes, you definitely want to make sure you are using a brand that doesn’t have added sweetness. Unfortunately I don’t have any peanut butter on hand at the moment to check the labels on, but I would look for the brands with the least ingredients and no artificial sweeteners.
Shannon says
Most store brand peanut butters are fine. What you want to be conscious of is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol added to different things for sweetness and is poisonous to our furry friends. Just check ypur labels. I use kroger brand peanut butter for Roxy since I make so many treats and go through a lot but Skippy Natural is great too!
Melissa says
Do you use original or unsweetened applesauce?
Christi says
Hi Melissa, unsweetened.

This recipe is so easy and a total hit with the canine crowd! I modified it to pupcakes for a fund raiser bakesale and they sold out in 45 minutes flat and now am making 3 dozen more for people who wanted them after the ones I brought were gone. This recipe makes 8 pupcakes that are normal sized so I double it.
Thanks for this great recipe! You’ve made many doggies super happy!

Made it last night… Easy as baking a regular cake. Thanks FullSizeRender.jpg

Could this recipe be converted to cupcakes?
Sam says
I did! Came out to about 6 little cupcakes; I filled the tins ~2/3 of the way with the batter and cooked them for just under 25 min at 350. They came out great! Way easier to serve between my 2 dogs than the whole cake, that’s for sure.

We have a few fur babies so I made it into cupcakes and froze them so I can pull a couple out for each celebration ? thank you for the great recipe! I used chopped bacon for sprinkles on some and shredded cheddar for my cheese lover, not to much of either just a tiny bit shredded carrots for our next party ?
Christi says
So glad your babies enjoyed them Sandra!
