This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

Hey! Awesome and easy recipe by the way! Quick question, what is the shelf life for this cake?
Christi says
Hi Capra, I’ve always served it within a day, otherwise I’ve frozen it. That said I’m sure you can get a few days out of it.

Hello! I’ve made this cake awhile ago and my dog loved it! Making it again but I was just wondering if you had an idea of how many days I can keep it before it goes bad?
Thanks in advance!

Omg my dog loved it ❤️

I made this last night substituting the flour with whole wheat flour since it’s what I had. I also used a mini loaf pan to make mini cakes instead of 1 big cake so we could split it up better between the pups. It turned out perfectly. All 4 of our Poms devoured their little cakes.

Just made this for our dog’s birthday and it was a huge success! I turned them into cupcakes so they could each have their own little cake. It made 8 cupcakes and I just had to bake them for about 22 minutes altogether. They licked the bowls clean! Great recipe:)

Linds, so glad your pups enjoyed it!

My Uqi loved it, he inhaled it. What a great birthday treat for him, thank you for the recipe.
Angel says
Can a human eat this to
Christi says
Funny you ask Angel, we made it for my dog this weekend and my daughter wondered the same thing. There is no reason you can’t eat it, it’s all regular ingredients. That said the lack of any sugar in it might not make for the most appetizing “cake” if you will. 🙂

I tried this recipe for Nibbler’s 11th birthday. Turned out great. I didn’t have applesauce so I substituted plain greek yogurt. Worked fine. I made mini pupcakes with 1 reg pupcake for the birthday girl. I found making ANY dog cake recipe into mini pupcakes is best, especially if you want to put frosting on it, a LOT less mess. I used the icing recipe that was provided, however added more peanut butter until I got the consistency I wanted, to pipe on the pupcakes :). Added a small amount of birthday sprinkles (remember these have sugar in them so keep it light) they were so cute!!! To answer other’s questions about freezing…they freeze great. I even iced them first then froze them (we had to take some to share with her cousins the following week). If you wanted to sweeten these up a bit, add maybe 1 TBSP of honey. My girls loved it both ways 🙂 Thanks for sharing such a wonderful & versatile recipe!!!

You are so welcome! Happy Birthday, Nibbler!
