This quick and easy Dog Cake Recipe is perfect for celebrating your pup’s birthday or spoiling them, just because!
My friends asked me how I planned to spoil my dogs for National Spoil Your Dog Day, and of course the answer included baking. Like any special day, I think we should celebrate with cake. A puppy approved dog cake!
I think it’s safe to say my furry friend is thrilled. Then again I have a cocker spaniel, so he basically lives, eats, breathes and sleeps for food. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a food motivated pup!
Dog Cake Recipe
This dog cake is packed full of great ingredients, including peanut butter, applesauce and pumpkin. It comes together and bakes up just like any other cake, but is perfect for your pets. The optional frosting is made from peanut butter and yogurt.
I’m often asked if humans can eat this cake as well, and the answer is YES! However, unlike a traditional cake, it lacks sugar, so just know it won’t be as sweet as your pet is.
Since first sharing this easy dog safe cake recipe years ago, thousands of pet parents just like you have made it. You can even see some of the great recreations that readers have made over on Instagram by checking out the #spoileddogcake hashtag! I’m so happy that so many of you have made, and loved, this recipe.
Decorating Your Cake
When I made my cake, I topped it with some store bought dog bones. Because they are minis, which makes them almost like dog cake sprinkles in my book!
That said, you can bake up some dog cookies, pumpkin dog treats, homemade dog treats or peanut butter dog treats to garnish this cake with.
No matter what you top it with, I’m sure your dog will love this homemade dog cake recipe. This recipe makes a single layer, but as you can see I doubled the recipe to make a layer cake.
The frosting is optional, but I really never think of frosting as optional (it’s my favorite part of the cake!) so I recommend it. While you can absolutely share this cake with your dogs, it’s lacking sugar so it won’t be sweet – just so you know.

This was great! We made them as “pupcakes” by doubling recipe and baking 17-18 minutes on convection bake setting.

I made the Spoiled Dog Cake recipe after my daughter found it and she made it and said her dog loved it. My other daughter was visiting this past weekend with her 2 dogs from South Carolina, so I made the cake for them. And my other daughter brought her dog over to visit. So I had 3 dogs over to share the cake. They all devoured it. Not one of them has had any bad side effects. I would definitely recommend this recipe.

Anyone making this recipe or others with peanut butter, please make sure your peanut butter doesn’t contain Xylitol!
‘Xylitol, a sweetener used in many foods, including peanut butter, yogurt, toothpaste and chewing gum, is safe for humans but potentially deadly for dogs. If ingested, it can cause seizures, liver failure and death, warned one animal hospital, which called xylitol “extremely toxic” to dogs’

Am I able to turn this cake recipe into a cupcake recipe? What are the changes to the measurements?
Christi says
Christina, I haven’t done so thus don’t have those measurements for you.
Julie says
Would it be safe to use food coloring?
Christi says
I would not recommend it, especially since the cake is pumpkin based, and thus fairly dark in color. You’d need a lot of food coloring to change the tone, and even then I’m not sure you could get a very attractive result. As far as safe, I don’t know since I’ve never thought to include it, so if you do want to color it, make sure you research if food coloring is safe for dogs.

When I made it, the cake turned out real flat/ dense; not so much like “cake”. Any ideas what went wrong or what to try different next time? I doubled the recipe & each cake round is less than an inch thick. Is it possible the recipe should be baking powder, rather than baking soda? Cooked a bit too long? (They’re not the least bit burned)
Christi says
Hi Kevin, this is actually the most popular recipe on my site, and probably the one made the most, so I think the recipe as written is pretty solid. Question, how did you measure your flour? Did you use the measuring cup to scoop the flour, or did you spoon the flour into the cup? I will say, this is more dense than a cake that you or I might eat from a bakery, it has more of a quick bread texture (think banana bread, pumpkin bread) just to give you an idea of what you should be getting as a final result.
Coleen Keefer says
Christi is correct. It is not a fluffy cake. I doubled the recipe and put into a 9 x 13 cake pan and it had just the right thickness.
